One day, as Hicks was on her way to the Community Animal Rescue & Adoption (CARA) shelter, she made a discovery that would forever change her heart. Hicks, a dedicated dog lover and president of CARA’s board, was driving to the shelter when she saw something unusual. A crate, abandoned and left on the side of the road, caught her attention. At first, she assumed the pup inside would be the only one needing her help.
But when she opened the crate, she was struck with a shocking sight. There was a larger dog — a mother — surrounded by seven tiny puppies.
“I was in complete shock,” Hicks said, her voice still trembling with emotion. “Who could do this to a brand-new little family?”
A Mother’s Eyes Speak Volumes
The mother dog was nervous, her eyes filled with sadness and fear. She had just given birth to her puppies and was left behind to fend for herself. Hicks couldn’t help but feel for the poor mama.
“She looked at me with the saddest eyes I’ve ever seen,” Hicks recalled. “She was so scared, but at the same time, you could see she was grateful that someone was there.”

At the shelter, the mother dog’s relief was visible. She was finally in a safe space, away from harm, with a warm and caring environment for her seven little puppies. The CARA staff immediately sprang into action, reaching out to their foster network to ensure that each puppy would have a loving home once they were ready to leave their mom.

As days passed, the once anxious and nervous mama began to find comfort in her new surroundings. She could finally nurse her puppies in peace, knowing that they were safe. The staff at CARA couldn’t help but marvel at the bond between mother and puppies.
“Mom is an amazing dog,” CARA shared on their Facebook page. “She’s one of the best moms we’ve ever seen. Her puppies are healthy and strong, nursing almost all the time. And when they’re not nursing, they’re in milk comas, full and content!”
The bond between mother and pups was a beautiful sight to see. The puppies grew stronger every day, thanks to their loving mom who never left their side.

Now, at five weeks old, the puppies are thriving, and the time has come for them to find their forever homes. They will soon travel to a trusted foster-based partner up north, where they will be carefully placed in loving families who will cherish them forever.
As for their mother, she will remain with her foster family until she’s ready for her own forever home. Hicks and the CARA team know that this sweet mama, who has already shown such unconditional love and dedication to her puppies, deserves a happy ending, too.
“The whole family will soon be on their way to new, loving homes,” Hicks said, her voice filled with hope. “They’ve all come so far, and it’s so rewarding to see them happy and healthy.”
