In the summer of 2023, a tan-and-white pit bull named Patience had a dream come true. After spending a long time in a shelter in New Jersey, she was finally adopted. She was overjoyed and couldn’t wait to have a family. For Patience, this was the fresh start she had been waiting for.
A Heartbreaking Return
But sadly, Patience’s happiness was short-lived. In November 2024, more than a year after being adopted, she was found wandering the streets of New Jersey. She was alone, injured, and seemed lost. Someone found her and took her back to the shelter where she had once been cared for.
When Patience returned, she wasn’t the happy dog she once was. The once hopeful, tail-wagging girl had changed. She no longer greeted visitors with a wagging tail at her kennel door. Instead, she hid in the corner of her space, facing the wall with her head down, as though she had lost all hope.
A Call for Help
The shelter staff was heartbroken. They saw how much Patience had suffered, and they wanted to help her. They shared her photo online, hoping someone would notice and offer help. That’s when a rescue group called SNARR Northeast, a team focused on helping special-needs animals, stepped in.
Maddie Weiser, from SNARR Northeast, saw Patience’s picture and immediately felt she needed to be part of their rescue. “Sometimes, when you see a dog, you just know they need you,” said Maddie. “Patience was one of those dogs. We knew we had to help her.”
A Fresh Start
With the support of their network, SNARR Northeast quickly found the perfect foster family for Patience. On December 22, 2024, they arrived at the shelter to take her home. Patience’s joy was unforgettable. She was so happy to be leaving the kennel behind.
“Patience was so happy!” Maddie recalled. “She transformed into a new dog. She loves human affection and cuddles, and she’s so thankful to be in a warm, safe home.”
Thanks to SNARR Northeast’s hard work, Patience spent her first holiday season in a loving family’s home instead of being alone in a shelter. It was a moment that marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life.
Healing and Understanding Patience
It’s been a few weeks since Patience left the shelter, and she’s happier than ever. Her foster family showered her with love and care every day. Meanwhile, the team at SNARR Northeast is working tirelessly to understand Patience’s health challenges. While no one knows exactly what happened to her, her symptoms suggest she may have been in a terrible accident before being found.
“We’re still figuring out what’s going on with her,” said Maddie. “She has a spinal injury, possibly from being hit by a car, which could be causing some of her symptoms. She’s also fully blind and can only see right in front of her. She has no peripheral vision. She will be seeing a neurologist soon for further testing.”
The Heart of Patience: A Special Dog
Patience’s health challenges might be tough, but they don’t define her. What makes Patience special is her sweet and quirky personality. Despite everything she’s been through, Patience is goofy, playful, and full of love.
“She uniquely shows affection,” Maddie shared. “She loves to play with her mouth. When she wants to say ‘hi,’ she pushes your arm with her mouth. It’s her way of being silly and showing love.”
Moving Forward with Hope
It’s difficult to believe that a dog as sweet and beautiful as Patience was ever abandoned. It’s heartbreaking to see how deeply her return to the shelter affected her. But Patience isn’t focused on her past anymore. She’s too busy enjoying her new life, surrounded by love and care.
Patience is still waiting for a full diagnosis, and once that’s complete, SNARR Northeast will help find her a forever home. For now, she’s living her best life with her foster family, who are giving her the love she deserves.
“Patience is the sweetest, happiest, most grateful dog,” said Maddie. “She’s finally getting the chance to live the life she’s always deserved.”
