Rescuer’s Heart Shatters After Finding Two Senior Dogs Abandoned With a Heartfelt Note

Earlier this week, the staff at Bloomfield Animal Shelter (BAS) in New Jersey arrived at work expecting another day of caring for animals. But as they pulled into the parking lot, their hearts dropped. Two dogs were waiting for them at the shelter gate, tied to the fence.

Someone had left them behind. And beside them was a note—one that would break everyone’s heart.

A Heartbreaking Goodbye

The staff rushed to the dogs. Both were seniors, their faces touched with gray fur. As they gently untied the leashes, they picked up the note and began to read.

“Hi. I am sorry, but my babies deserve to live their golden years happy and in a good, warm home for the winter,” it said. “I can’t take care of them while living on the street. Our home was foreclosed on, putting us out in the street. Please take care of them and don’t kill them.”

Tears welled up in the eyes of the staff. These weren’t just abandoned dogs. They were loved dogs. Dogs who had once had a home, a family, a warm bed. And now, they were alone.

Shadow and Tiger: A Bond That Can’t Be Broken

The note revealed the dogs’ names—Shadow and Tiger. They were littermates, born in 2009. In just a few weeks, they would turn 15 years old.

“Hi, we are Shadow (black baby) and Tiger (brown brindle baby), and we are littermate brothers,” the note continued. “We have a birthday coming up around October 12. We will be 15 years old!!!!! Please keep us together if you can.”

Their owner had written every word with love. The note described how friendly the boys were—gentle with other animals, great with children, and never aggressive. But without being able to speak to their owner, the shelter could only guess at their history.

And there was another problem. The shelter was full.

Nowhere to Go

The staff at BAS wanted to help. But with every cage occupied, there was simply no space for Shadow and Tiger.

“While we feel terrible for the circumstances, this is an unacceptable way to turn your pets into the shelter, especially when there are no open cages,” BAS shared in a desperate plea for help.

The situation was urgent. The dogs needed a safe place—fast.

A Rescue Mission Filled with Fate

Then, a miracle happened. Scooby-Doo’s Rescue Mission (SDRM), a local rescue group, saw the shelter’s call for help. Christine Biggiani Bakelaar, a member of the organization, immediately stepped up. She drove straight to the shelter to get the dogs.

But when she read the note, she felt an instant connection.

“OMG! I just re-read the letter written by the owner of the two dogs… their birthday is October 12… THAT’S MY BIRTHDAY!!!” Bakelaar wrote on Facebook. “This was meant to be.”

A Safe Haven for Shadow and Tiger

With Bakelaar’s help, Shadow and Tiger found a temporary foster home. They were now on a peaceful farm, with open fields to explore and a loving caregiver to make them feel safe.

“They need to decompress,” Bakelaar wrote. “[They] certainly will with all the love that they are getting.”

But even as the dogs settled into their new surroundings, their rescuers couldn’t stop thinking about their previous owner.

A Message to Their Family

Bakelaar hoped to reconnect with the person who had loved these dogs for 15 years. She wanted them to know that Shadow and Tiger were safe, loved, and together.

“If anyone on here sees this and knows the people, please have them reach out to me,” she wrote. “No questions asked, other than I want to know more about them, and I truly [want to] let them know that their boys are OK. I promise never to separate them.”

She even offered to send updates and hoped, if possible, that the original owner could visit them one day.

A Crisis That’s All Too Common

Shadow and Tiger’s story is one of many. Across the country, families are being forced to give up their beloved pets due to financial hardships, eviction, and homelessness.

For these two boys, luck was on their side. They have a warm place to rest, full bellies, and people who adore them. But countless other pets are still waiting, still hoping, for a second chance.

A Forever Home Awaits

Shadow and Tiger are still in foster care, but they dream of finding a forever home. A place where they can stay together, where they can spend their golden years surrounded by love.

Until then, they are safe. They are cherished. And they will never be alone again.
