Mary Nakiso, a dedicated volunteer dog rescuer, was driving through Orange County, California when something caught her eye. On the roadside, she saw a creature cowering, trembling, and completely alone. It was large and hairy, and the sight made her stomach sink.
Without hesitation, Mary slammed on her brakes and rushed out of her car to investigate. As she approached, she realized how massive and terrified the animal was.
A Gentle Giant in Distress
“He is 75 pounds and so big but so scared,” Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, later shared on Facebook.
The giant dog’s fear was palpable, and Mary quickly learned the heartbreaking reason behind it. He had been cruelly abandoned by his family only moments before.
“When he first got thrown out, he was so confused [and] running in circles in traffic,” Hall explained. “A huge jeep with huge tires went over him…”
The dog, later named Benji, had no idea why his family had left him. Confused and panicked, he roamed the busy streets, desperately trying to find his way home. Cars sped by, narrowly missing him as he darted in and out of traffic. After a while, Benji disappeared, leaving Mary worried and determined to find him.
A Community Comes Together
Mary knew she couldn’t do this alone. She immediately called Suzette Hall, a seasoned rescuer, to share what had happened. Together, they monitored local social media groups for any updates or sightings of the scared dog.
Hours later, a post appeared: someone had spotted a giant, matted dog wandering in their neighborhood.
Traffic prevented Suzette from getting there quickly, so she reached out to three trusted friends who lived nearby. These volunteers, Nuñez Aky, Yamileth, and Karla, didn’t hesitate. They rushed to the neighborhood and found Benji, who was still running back and forth in fear.
A Safe Haven for Benji
The team patiently waited for Benji to calm down. Hours of coordination and careful planning finally paid off when they managed to guide him into a yard and shut the gate behind him.
“My heart was so happy,” Suzette wrote. “The fear and terror he had been through was over, and this big hunk of pure love was finally safe.”
As the team approached Benji, they showered him with gentle words and love. Though still scared, the dog allowed them to pick him up and carry him to safety.
A Fresh Start for a Brave Soul
The rescuers took Benji to Camino Pet Hospital, where he received a much-needed makeover. Layers of matted fur, representing his painful past, were shaved away.
“He had dreadlocks,” Suzette shared. “All the layers of his past [have] been shaved away.”
Benji’s transformation was remarkable. His newfound freedom from his tangled coat was just the beginning of his journey to a brighter future.
A Hopeful Future
After being neutered and given time to heal, Benji will soon meet his new foster family. Though no one can truly know what his life was like before, his future is now filled with love, care, and second chances.
Suzette and her team couldn’t be prouder of the sweet dog they rescued.
“Benji is the sweetest, most loving dog I have ever met,” Suzette said. “[He’s] truly a miracle.”

Benji’s story is a testament to the resilience of animals and the power of compassion. For pet owners everywhere, it’s a reminder to cherish and care for the animals who depend on us. Every dog deserves love, safety, and a place to call home.
