In Georgia, a man named Vincent Lemark Burrell, 57, was sent to jail for 475 years. He ran a horrible underground dogfighting ring. More than 100 pit bulls were found on his property. These poor dogs were thin, hurt, and left to suffer.
This wasn’t just a case of bad care—it was cruelty beyond words.
The Day the Truth Came Out
Back in November 2022, police were called to Burrell’s home after an Amazon driver saw many dogs tied up and looking weak. When officers arrived, what they found broke their hearts.
There were 107 pit bulls in total. Some were tied to trees and metal poles. Others were chained with heavy logging chains and thick collars. Many had no food, no water, and no shelter. Some were left out in the heat, rain, and cold. Others were locked inside a dark, dirty basement, surrounded by filth.

Scars, Pain, and Silence
Some of the dogs had scars all over their bodies, the kind of wounds only caused by dog fighting. A few even had their teeth ripped out. These animals were used as tools, not treated like living beings.
Their eyes showed pain. Their bodies showed suffering. But they stayed silent. They had no voice. Until now.
What Police Found Inside
Police found tools and objects that showed this was a professional dog-fighting operation. There was a treadmill to train the dogs, a breeding stand, and a break stick used to pry open the jaws of dogs during fights. There were also vet drugs, contracts, and even a live chicken used to taunt the dogs.
This was no small crime. It was a well-run, cruel business that caused so much pain.
The Fight for Justice
Vincent Burrell was found guilty of 93 counts of dog fighting and 10 counts of animal cruelty. The judge gave him a sentence of 475 years in jail.
The Paulding County District Attorney made it clear: “If you come to our county and hurt animals like this, we will make an example out of you.”
Saving the Survivors
Every single one of the 106 surviving dogs was rescued. They were taken to animal shelters where they could begin to heal, physically and emotionally. Sadly, none of the dogs had ever been to a vet or received any care before this.
Sheriff Gary Gulledge said it best: “The dark and sinister world of dog fighting has no place in our world.”
