When Cupid’s family packed up their belongings, loaded their car, and drove away, the loyal dog didn’t understand. He had always been a good boy. He had always loved them. So why was he left behind?
Confused and heartbroken, Cupid stayed on the porch of his now-empty home in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Day after day, he waited. Night after night, he curled up in the same spot, hoping they would come back.
But they never did.
Neighbors Notice a Heartbroken Soul
The days turned into weeks. Neighbors saw Cupid sleeping on the cold porch, his eyes filled with longing. He wouldn’t leave, afraid he might miss the moment his family returned.
Concerned for the devoted pup, the neighbors reached out to Janine Guido, the founder of Speranza Animal Rescue. When Guido arrived, she learned that Cupid’s owners had moved away and simply abandoned him.
“All I was told was that his owners moved out and left him behind,” Guido shared with The Dodo. “I asked around, and everyone just said, ‘They moved out.’”
Searching for Food and Safety
With no one to care for him, Cupid was forced to scavenge for food. When Guido arrived, she found him rummaging through a dumpster, desperately searching for something to eat.
But when she tried to approach him, Cupid panicked. He ran back to the porch—his last connection to the family he loved. Desperate, he jumped up on the door, scratching and whimpering, as if pleading to be let inside.
Guido watched as his hope shattered. “That small act broke my heart,” she said.
Gaining Cupid’s Trust
Guido knew she had to help him, but Cupid was too scared to let her near. She tried to coax him with food, but he bolted. For 30 minutes, she patiently followed him through alleyways, speaking to him in a soft, gentle voice.
“It sounds dumb, but I swear he knew what I was saying to him,” Guido recalled. “He came over, sat down, and allowed me to leash him.”
During the car ride to the rescue, she continued speaking to him, telling him he was safe now. That everything was going to be okay.
For the first time in weeks, Cupid let himself believe it.
A New Beginning at Speranza Animal Rescue
At the rescue, Cupid began adjusting to his new life. Despite everything he had been through, he greeted everyone with a wagging tail.
“He has been nothing but the sweetest gentleman since coming to the rescue,” Guido said. “You can tell he’s still really confused, but he’s happy to meet everyone.”
Cupid is now receiving the medical care he needs and, most importantly, love. Soon, he will be ready to find a forever home—a family that will never abandon him again.
“I don’t think it will be hard to find him a home because he truly is the sweetest guy,” Guido said.
