Last week, in St. Louis, Missouri, a heartbreaking sight was discovered. A helpless dog was found tied to a fence at an abandoned school. She was dangerously thin, her ribs painfully visible beneath her weak body. There was no telling how long she had been there, suffering in silence.
No food. No water. No warmth.
She was fading away, unnoticed by the world. But then, fate intervened.
A Miracle Rescue
Someone spotted the frail pup just in time and immediately called animal control. If they had found her any later, she might not have survived.
“It’s a miracle someone even saw her,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis wrote on Facebook.
Animal control officers rushed to the scene, realizing the urgency of the situation. They gently untied the weak dog and took her straight to Stray Rescue of St. Louis’ onsite clinic. She needed immediate medical care, and time was running out.

Love and Care at the Shelter
The moment the rescuers met her, they saw something incredible. Despite her suffering, she was full of love. She didn’t growl or shy away. Instead, she wagged her tail, trusting the people who had come to help.
“Even though she was in horrible shape, she was so sweet,” said Natalie Thomson, chief communications officer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis. “She was weak and all bones, but she trusted us and wanted to cuddle with our vet techs.”
She was given the name Levey.
A Slow Road to Recovery
As much as her rescuers wanted to give her all the food she wanted, they had to be careful. A starving dog must be fed gradually to avoid refeeding syndrome, a dangerous condition that can be fatal if the dog eats too much too quickly.
Day by day, Levey began to regain her strength. Small meals helped her fragile body adjust, and soon, she started gaining weight at a healthy pace.
A week later, she was already showing signs of transformation. Her once-lifeless eyes were now filled with hope. She was getting stronger. And she was finally safe.
Finding Friendship and Joy
As Levey healed, her true personality began to shine. She was playful, affectionate, and full of gratitude.
“Levey’s personality is amazing,” Thomson said. “She is so grateful for love, affection and loves other dogs. All she wants to do is play.”
One dog, in particular, became her favorite playmate—Alaric, another rescue who had survived starvation. They bonded instantly, understanding each other’s past struggles in a way only they could.
“They have similar play styles and just wanted to wrestle now that they both are feeling more energetic than they have in a long, long time,” Thomson shared.
Looking for a Foster Home
Although Levey has come a long way, her journey is not over yet. She still has some weight to gain before she is strong enough for adoption. For now, she needs a loving foster home where she can continue to heal and grow.
As Stray Rescue of St. Louis wrote on Facebook, “[She’s] ready for the fun part … to be fattened up!”
Levey has survived abandonment, starvation, and heartbreak. Now, all she wants is to be loved.
Her story is a testament to resilience, kindness, and the power of second chances. And soon, with the help of a caring family, she will find the forever home she truly deserves.
