Goran Marinkovic walks the streets of Kraljevo, Serbia, every day with a mission. He carries food for over 100 stray dogs and cats who have no one else to care for them. For him, this is more than just kindness—it’s a calling.
But one day in March, his usual routine turned into something unforgettable.
A Cry for Help
As Marinkovic walked down a narrow pathway, he heard a faint, desperate cry coming from a pile of rocks. He followed the sound and found a tiny puppy, shivering from the cold. She was hungry, weak, and alone.
“I had food with me, so I immediately gave her some salami,” Marinkovic recalled.
The little puppy had nothing—not even a safe place to sleep. She had been using an old, discarded boot as her shelter. It was clear she was too young to survive without a mother, yet there were no other dogs in sight. She was completely alone in the world.
A Silent Plea
As Marinkovic knelt, the tiny dog did something heartbreaking. Instead of running away or barking in fear, she simply lay down and exposed her belly—a sign of complete surrender.
“She was exhausted,” Marinkovic said. “She knew I might be her only chance.”
It was at that moment that Marinkovic made a decision. He couldn’t leave her behind.
A Second Chance
He gently picked up the fragile puppy and carried her to the vet. He wasn’t sure if she would survive after being alone for so long. She had been sleeping under the open sky, with nothing but scraps to eat. But this little fighter, whom he named Coco, refused to give up.
Day by day, she grew stronger. Her once-weary eyes sparkled with hope. And as she recovered, her true personality began to shine through.
“She loves people,” Marinkovic said. “She’s always cheerful.”
Finding the Perfect Home
Marinkovic knew he couldn’t keep Coco forever, but he wanted to make sure she found the best home possible. He shared her story online, and soon, his inbox was flooded with messages from people wanting to adopt her.
Still, he didn’t want to rush the decision. He reached out to a friend who specialized in international animal adoptions, ensuring Coco would end up in the perfect place.
When the time was right, and after receiving all her vaccines, Coco set off on a journey to her new home in Germany.
A Life Transformed
A year later, Coco is unrecognizable from the frail little pup Marinkovic found hiding behind a shoe. She has grown into a happy, fluffy dog who loves adventure. Her new family adores her, and she is now living the life she always deserved.
“Coco has a beautiful home, and she is currently on vacation,” Marinkovic shared. “I get pictures regularly—they’re at the sea right now.”
For Marinkovic, every rescue is a victory. While he wishes that every stray in Serbia could be as lucky as Coco, he knows that with every dog he helps, he is making a difference.
Hope for the Forgotten
There are countless strays still waiting for their miracle. But as long as there are kind-hearted people like Marinkovic, more dogs will get the second chance they deserve.
