A Shared Journey: Two Souls Without a Home
Suzette Hall knew what it felt like to have nowhere to go. Recent floods had forced her out of her Southern California home, leaving her feeling lost and displaced. So, when she heard about a little white dog going door to door, searching for shelter, her heart broke.
“She was just like me,” Suzette thought. “We were both looking for a place to belong.”
The dog—a tiny bichon mix with matted fur—had been spotted by neighbors a few days earlier. They believed she had been abandoned in a nearby park. When the devastating storms rolled in, the frightened pup started scratching at doors, hoping someone would let her in.
“She would scratch and scratch, like she was begging, ‘Please help me,’” Suzette said. “When no one answered, she’d just sit there on the porch, shaking in the cold rain.”

A Plea That Went Unanswered
Suzette, founder of Logan’s Legacy dog rescue, immediately posted about the dog online, hoping someone might recognize her and claim her. But this time, no one responded.
“Not a single message came through,” Suzette said. “Nobody was looking for her.”
The silence was heartbreaking. This little dog had no one. Suzette knew she had to step in.
The Rescue: Earning Nikki’s Trust
When Suzette arrived at the neighborhood, she brought all her usual rescue tools: a humane trap and plenty of treats. She set up the trap and scattered the food nearby, hoping the dog’s hunger would coax her in. But fear kept the little pup away.
Realizing a different approach was needed, Suzette sat down on the cold, wet ground and began to speak softly to the dog.
“I told her I understood,” Suzette said. “I said, ‘I know what it feels like to be lost. I don’t have a home right now either.’”
The pup stopped trembling and looked at Suzette with tired, curious eyes. Suzette continued speaking gently, inching closer with every word.
“I just kept telling her it was going to be okay,” Suzette said.
Finally, the pup allowed Suzette to touch her. It was a moment of trust that Suzette hadn’t expected but was deeply grateful for.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Suzette said. “She trusted me.”
Suzette slipped a lead around the dog’s neck and carried her to the truck. As they drove to the vet, the pup curled up and fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.

A Fresh Start for Nikki
At the vet, the dog received a clean bill of health. Her only problem was her matted fur, so Suzette arranged a grooming session. As the groomer worked to remove the tangled knots, the pup’s transformation began.
“She looked so different once her fur was shaved,” Suzette said. “The groomer thought she looked like a Nicole, so we named her Nikki for short.”
With her new haircut and clean coat, Nikki was a brand-new dog. Her tail wagged, and her eyes sparkled with hope. Suzette then brought her to a loving foster home where Nikki quickly won everyone over with her gentle, quiet nature.
“She doesn’t even bark,” Suzette said with a laugh. “She’s just so kind and perfect.”
Waiting for a Forever Home
Nikki is now waiting for her forever family. Suzette is confident it won’t take long for someone to fall in love with her.
“She’s one of those dogs who makes your heart melt instantly,” Suzette said. “She’s pure perfection.”
Until that day comes, Nikki is enjoying her foster home, where she is showered with love.
A Lesson in Hope
For Suzette, rescuing Nikki wasn’t just about saving a dog. It was about finding hope amid her struggles. In Nikki, she saw a reminder that even in the darkest storms, there’s always a chance for a fresh start.
And for Nikki, Suzette was the open door she had been searching for all along.
