Cinnamon, a red-nosed Pitbull, sat alone in a cold shelter in North Carolina. She had been abandoned at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control shelter, but what hurt the most was that she had been left behind without her babies
Every time someone stopped by her kennel, her eyes filled with tears. She was grieving, and it was clear to everyone who saw her.
One volunteer, deeply moved by Cinnamon’s sorrow, shared her story. What happened next would change Cinnamon’s life forever.
A Chance Encounter
Sarah Jennings Sleime, a Greater Charlotte SPCA volunteer, made an unplanned visit to the shelter on Saturday. She had come to check out a few dogs, not knowing that one special pup would steal her heart.
As she walked past the kennels, she noticed Cinnamon. The Pitbull sat with a slumped posture, almost human-like, staring out with sad, teary eyes.
“She had just had puppies, but they weren’t with her,” Sleime recalled. The shelter workers suspected that Cinnamon had been used for breeding over and over again, only to be discarded when she was no longer needed.
Each time Sleime spoke to her, Cinnamon’s eyes welled up with tears. It was unlike anything she had ever seen before.
A Cry for Help
The shelter was at full capacity, and the SPCA couldn’t take in any large dogs at that time. But Sleime knew she couldn’t walk away without trying to help Cinnamon.
She took out her phone, recorded a short video of the weeping Pitbull, and posted it on Facebook.
Within just 48 hours, the video went viral. Over one million people watched it, and it was shared more than 20,000 times. Messages flooded Sleime’s inbox—hundreds of people wanted to give Cinnamon a home.
A Family Steps In
Among those who saw the heartbreaking video was Meghan Connor Shelton, a Pitbull lover from Charlotte, North Carolina.
“When I saw her crying in that cage, I cried. My kids cried. I showed my husband, and he said we could go look at her tomorrow,” Meghan shared.
The very next morning, Meghan and her family were first in line at the shelter. The moment they met Cinnamon, they knew she was meant to be with them.
“It was love at first sight,” Meghan said. “She just pulled at our heartstrings.”
A New Beginning
Cinnamon, now named Rosie, was about to start a new chapter. But there was one more step—meeting her new brother, Blu, a 3-year-old Pitbull already living in the Shelton home.
At first, there was uncertainty. Would they get along? Would Rosie feel safe?
But as soon as they met, tails wagged in perfect sync. They sat next to each other as if they had been waiting for this moment all their lives. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
A Happy Ending for Rosie—and Many Others
As Rosie settled into her new home, her personality blossomed. Her family quickly discovered her most adorable quirk—when she got excited, she snorted like a little pig!
Her heartbreaking story had a beautiful ending, but it didn’t stop there. Rosie’s viral video led to something even greater. Many other dogs at the shelter found their forever homes because of the awareness her story brought.
Rosie once abandoned and heartbroken, now wakes up every day surrounded by love, with a best friend by her side and a family who adores her.
